The Greenes started as a sibling trio in Boone, North Carolina, with brothers Tony and Tim Greene and sister Kim, accompanied by their father Everette on piano. They began singing together in 1978, and became known on a national level in the mid-1980s. 

Kim Greene married Dean Hopper in 1988 and joined the Hoppers in 1989. The Greenes had several other sopranos before hiring TaRanda Kiser in 1997; she would ultimately marry Tony Greene and become a permanent fixture in the group.

The Greenes have had numerous Singing News Radio hits, including three #1 hits, and Greenes member soprano Amy Lambert won a Singing News Fan Award for Horizon Individual in 1990 for her work with the group.
