The Kingsmen bus made its way to the Point Pleasant, West Virginia area last weekend. The local newspaper, the Point Pleasant Register, featured a story on the Kingsmen, noting local ties:
Two members of The Kingsmen have local ties. Bryan Hutson, lead vocalist and emcee, is from St. Albans where he was the Worship Minister from 2001-2005. And Cody McVey, pianist, hails from Alderson.
In part 3 of Jeff Collins’ studio tips series, he walks the Kingsmen through arranging a convention song:
In part 2 of Jeff Collins’ pre-session series, Collins and the Kingsmen talk through song selection for an uptempo song:
Studio owner Jeff Collins explains what is involved in a pre-session – and then there is a chance to watch one unfold, as the Kingsmen arrange a ballad for their upcoming spring 2011 release.
Last weekend, Kingsmen owner / bass singer Ray Dean Reese announced that Randy Crawford is returning to the baritone/lead position vacated by Phillip Hughes’ April departure. Crawford previously sang with the Kingsmen from 2001-2003; he returns comes to the Kingsmen after a stint with Brian Free & Assurance.
The announcement states: “Randy is an extremely gifted vocalist as well as a fine Christian gentleman. He has an earnest heart for ministry and a passionate desire to see souls won for Christ. Originally from Lexington, Kentucky; he will be relocating to the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina immediately.”
“I am beyond excited to be back with the Kingsmen,” Crawford said. “The Kingsmen organization has always been one of class and professionalism. Simply put; they represent the best in gospel music. Ray and the guys have welcomed me back to the family and we are ready to be about the Father’s business.”

Popular gospel music studio musician David Johnson was recently inducted into the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame in Wilkesboro, NC. Johnson has appeared over the years on many, if not most, of yesterday’s and today’s top gospel artists recordings, a list much too long to list. His incredible musicianship through acoustic and electric guitar, fiddle, steel guitar, harmonica, banjo, resonator guitar and mandolin has been appreciated and enjoyed by scores of listeners. David is also an accomplished songwriter, with artists such as the McKameys, the Kingsmen and the Isaacs recording his songs.
Tim Surrett presented the award at the event, stating famed bluegrass guitarist Tony Rice’s comment that David Johnson was “possibly the best musician he had ever known.”
Other inductees included Dolly Parton, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson and six others.
David is also a former two-time recipient of the SGMA studio musician award.
Crossroads is very proud of this honor for David, one long overdue in our opinion!
